Drug driving arrest after two hospitalised in Wigan multi-car crash

One of the motorists involved in a serious multi-car crash on a major Wigan road has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving.

Two were rushed to hospital after being cut from the wreckage of a three car pile-up on Central Park Way on Sunday afternoon.

Police were called to to the incident at around 3.20pm yesterday and immediately closed the road between Wigan Lane and Greenough Street.

Firefighters and paramedics were also called to the scene.

At around 8pm that evening, GMP traffic police announced that one of the drivers has been arrested for drug-driving.

Officers tweeted: "Central Park Way, Wigan. 3 veh serious injury collision closed road for 5 hours. Offending driver arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and drug driving after positive roadside drug screening test. Road will re open shortly #nonefortheroad"

Both Greater Manchester Police and the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed to Wigan Today that two people were extracted from the smashed vehicles and taken to Salford Royal's trauma hub. The extent of their injuries are still unknown."

A police spokesperson said: "Emergency services attended and a woman and a man were taken to hospital for treatment of their serious injuries.

"The road was closed for a number of hours while officers dealt with the incident.

"Enquiries into the full circumstances around this incident are ongoing.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident 1343 of 20/05/18."

There have long been concerns about the safety of the road following several serious collisions.
