A MAN who was so drunk he cannot remember punching a woman in the face on King Street has appeared in court.
Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court heard that Martin Corner, 34, told police during an interview that he cannot remember anything after drinking 10 pints and several shots of Sambuca at the Last Orders pub in Wigan at about 10pm on August 30.
But Corner, of Ince Green Lane, Ince, admitted one count of assault but told police that he had no idea why he had hit her or why he couldn’t remember anything.
Katie Beattie, prosecuting, said: “The victim and the defendant are not known to each other. It was about 5.15am when the victim, her sister and friend came out of Jumpin Jak’s on King Street.
“She admitted she had been drinking but said she felt OK. She saw another friend and a male stood by her. She went over to see if she was OK because she knew she had been assaulted on King Street before. Her friend said she was fine but the man was still standing close to her so she asked him what his problem was. The man pushed her so she slapped him in the face to protect herself. Another man came over and got in between the two. The defendant then reached round the unknown male and punched the victim in the face.”
The victim suffered abrasions on her bottom and top lip and swelling and bruising to her right eye. Corner will be sentenced on October 1.
