THE Wigan Evening Post and Wigan Observer have teamed up with Tesco Extra, Wigan, to encourage kids to eat great, feel great, and win some fantastic prizes for their school!

We have £1,000 up for grabs, plus a fantastic session from the Junior Chef Academy, for the winning school! And our runner up will receive

£500 plus a bumper pack of fun sports gear including footballs, cricket sets, skipping ropes and more!

Plus we have a super free gift for the first 25 schools who register to take part – a gardening kit with fruit and veg seeds worth £35!

The team at Tesco Extra in Wigan are delighted to be supporting this healthy eating promotion.

“Children across Wigan have the opportunity to win some great prizes and have fun learning about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.”

Firstly, schools should call us on 01772 838180 or email us at to let us know you want to join in, and we can get the fantastic free gardening kits to the first 25 schools to contact us.

Then taking part is easy – schools need to encourage pupils, staff and families to cut out and collect the five-a-day fruity tokens which will be printed in the Wigan Observer between April 16th and May 7th, and also in the Wigan Evening Post each Friday between April 19th and May 10th.

Each fruity token has a points value (look out for the bumper water-melon token!) and at the end of the promotion, the two schools which have amassed the highest points total (calculated on a pupil/token ratio) will win our prizes.

In the coming weeks, we will tell you when and where to send your tokens. So get cutting and collecting for your chance to win one of our fantastic prizes. Your school could be in the money!

The prize, funded by the Tesco Extra store in Wigan, is a full day’s session at your school with the Junior Chef’s Academy and head chef, Paul Cooper.

Win the competition and Paul and his team will come to your school with an invitation to take part in some of the most exciting and unusual food education workshops that the country has ever seen. They’ll transform your hall into a Junior Chefs’ kitchen and, through quizzes, experiments and practical sessions, they’ll reveal the secrets of producing dishes that are healthy, delicious and fun!

With Junior Chefs, you’ll be able to dazzle your family and friends with fascinating food facts, you’ll be sure to impress with your mastery of Krazy Kitchen Science and, best of all, you’ll be able to take your tasty new creations home so everyone can marvel at your genius!

For your school, it couldn’t be easier to organise: Junior Chefs will provide everything necessary to create an unforgettable experience.

From chefs’ hats to cutlery, ingredients to instructions, they’ll set everything up and take it all away again at the end of the day – so all they’ll leave behind will be great memories and a new-found love for food.

And when the session’s over, the fun needn’t stop there; you’ll also be taking away a Junior Chefs recipe pack so you can show off your new skills at home.

If you’ve got a secret ambition to be Britain’s next great celebrity chef, then why not enter our competition today? There’s no better way to develop your talents than with Junior Chef’s Academy.
