PUPILS from 40 schools took part in an Olympic Legacy event to encourage youngsters to take an interest in sport.

The event was organised by Leigh MP Andy Burnham, former culture, media and sport secretary, in a bid to continue of the London 2012 games,

Leigh paralympic swimmer Heather Federickson; British Wheelchair Rugby athlete and Captain of the Great Britain National Wheelchair Rugby Team Steve Brown; retired British sprint athlete, and former World Indoor Champion and former Cleveland Cavaliers player John Amaechi attended at the opening and closing ceremonies.

The youngsters competed in a variety of games in the athletic ground.

A spokesman for Leigh Sports Village said: “This is something Andy Burnham wanted to do to get more young people interested in sports and follow on from last year’s Olympic games.

“He wanted to create this legacy and do it every year.”
