WIGAN and Leigh College Students’ Union has been successful in a bid as part of the NUS Green Fund.
The £80,000 grant has come from a £5m fund from the Higher Education Funding Council for England, delivered by the National Union of Students (NUS), designed to engage students with green issues and encourage sustainability.
The college was one of only 25 to receive funding out of applications from 105 organisations nationwide, and the only Further Education College to be chosen in its own right.
Wigan and Leigh College NUS will be tasked with leading local and global green projects, with at least one of each taking place at each college’s centre, alongside projects within curriculum.
College Student Services Manager Roger Shearer said: “We decided to apply for this fund as we are keen to promote green and sustainable activities at the college, and we want this to be student led wherever possible.
“The college understands the importance of the student voice and it is our responsibility to help create a vibrant and dynamic learning environment.”
