A WIGAN teacher has landed a date with royalty after helping provide disabled students a pathway into work.
Helen Leach, who works at Hawkley Brook College at Hope School, Marus Bridge, has been invited to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace.
She was selected from hundreds of nominations to attend after her sterling work in Mencap’s Inspire Me project.
Mrs Leach, who has worked at the school for 17 years, arranged work placements for the students at businesses across Wigan.
She was informed three months ago that she had made a shortlist of 600 nominations before now being told that she had been awarded an invitation to the garden party at Buckingham Palace.
She said: “I couldn’t believe it. There are only 20 teachers invited so I really am honoured to be selected. I’ve got myself a new hat and dress.
“They’ve been on a big drive at the moment to get all the students into a workplace with the Inspire Me project.
“When they came and saw the sort of places we had got the children to, they were very shocked.”
