ST John Rigby College PE tutor John Ireland has been honoured for his contribution to education at an exclusive reception at the House of Commons.
John was presented with the award for Further Education Teacher/Lecturer of the Year in the North after being shortlisted from a record number of thank you nominations made by pupils, past and present, parents and colleagues as part of the Pearson Teaching Awards’ annual Thank A Teacher Day.
He joined winning teachers and four awarded schools from across Northern Ireland, England and Wales at the prestigious Pearson Teaching Awards ceremony at the House of Commons which will be aired on BBC2 in the autumn.
MP for Wigan Lisa Nandy proudly congratulated John on his award.
She said: “I am delighted that Wigan’s hard-working and dedicated teaching staff have been recognised by the Pearson Teaching Awards.
“I am sure John’s students and colleagues are incredibly proud of the commitment he has shown to St John Rigby College and the lasting part he has played in countless student lives.
“The effect of a good teacher in a young person’s life can be genuinely transformational; it is important that the vital role that teachers play is recognised and rewarded and I am pleased that we are able to do so for John.”
Will Wyatt, Chair of the Teaching Awards Trust, added: “The difference a good teacher can make to a pupil’s life is beyond measure and a good teacher is never forgotten.”
