THE son of a popular Wigan news photographer has been stabbed to death.

A murder probe was launched after father-of-one John Leatherbarrow was found at a home in Westfield Drive, Leyland, on Sunday lunchtime.

The 37-year-old from Ulnes Walton was the son of Wigan Evening Post veteran lensman John Leatherbarrow.

John Snr and wife Norma only found out about the tragedy after they received a call from their son’s ex-partner.

Their 40-year-old daughter Sara said today: “His former partner rang my mum and dad. She said she had been getting messages on Facebook saying there had been some trouble on Westfield Drive and someone had been stabbed and it was John.”

The couple went to the scene and were taken away by police to Leyland police station where the news was confirmed to them.

Sara today led tributes to her brother, saying: “He was a much loved son, dad, brother and uncle. He had numerous jobs in his life and he could turn his hand to anything.

“He could take something apart and put it back together again. Everyone said wherever he worked he was a real grafter.

“He always had a lot of compassion for people with less than he had. He was very kind.

“His son came every week and he was his little world.”

A 41-year-old man from Leyland has since been arrested on suspicion of murder and police are appealing for information. Anyone with details should ring 101.
