FORMER Coronation Street actress Sherrie Hewson has unveiled a new community hall at a Wigan church.
The hut at St Francis of Assisi was built thanks to a generous cash donation from parishioner Doris Holliday, who left £10,000 in her will.
The official opening follows six years of planning and fund-raising to create the perfect meeting place for residents.
And the TV star, whose granddaughter attends the toddlers’ group, was only too pleased to declare the amenity open, unperturbed by a power cut shortly before the opening ceremony.
Church warden Margaret Banks said: “It was so lovely to receive such a large donation from one of our former members, none of this would be possible if it wasn’t for her.
“The hut is now absolutely beautiful inside and very modern.
“Everything was perfect on the opening day except for the unexpected power loss when all of the electrics failed prior to opening.
“We were all lighting candles!”
