AN EX-Wigan councillor has been jailed for expenses fraud.

Emma McGurrin, who represented the Standish ward for Labour before being deselected, was today handed an eight-month prison term at Liverpool Crown Court. Branded a liar by the judge, the mother of one from Collett Close, Scholes, was told she must serve at least four months behind bars.

In December a jury found her unanimously guilty of eight out of nine charges of fraud with regard to claiming expenses for childminding services that did not take place. The hearing was told she cheated Wigan Council out of £1,700.

Sentence had been deferred so that the 36-year-old could spend Christmas with her family.
