A WIGAN ex-councillor has pleaded not guilty to a charge of fraud and will return to crown court for a trial next month.

Emma McGurrin, who lost her council seat this year, appeared before Recorder of Liverpool Clement Goldstone QC yesterday.

The 36-year-old stands accused of falsely claiming child-care expenses from Wigan Council during her time as an elected member.

Prosecutors allege that Ms McGurrin made a false representation in order to gain money for herself. She has previously said she vehemently denies any wrong-doing.

The trial, which is expected to last the best part of a week, could see senior council officials take the stand, the Evening Post understands.

Ms McGurrin of Collett Close, Scholes, will return to Liverpool Crown Court in the week beginning November 24.
