FELLOW fans and have been hailed heroes for saving the life of a Wigan Warriors supporter who collapsed after his team’s thrilling derby match win over St Helens.
Ken Orrell is now said to be doing very well after suddenly taking ill as he walked across the foot bridge at the rear of the DW Stadium on Good Friday evening.
Friends feared the worse as two onlookers sought to revive him before ambulance staff took over.
It has been reported that a tent was erected on the bridge to give the patient some privacy which prompted some people to speculate incorrectly on social media that the incident had proved fatal.
Even more wildly it was also circulated that the incident was in fact the collapse of the bridge and that several fans had ended up in the canal.
But Wigan Warriors’ Facebook page reported: “Great news! Ken Orrell, the Wigan fan taken ill after yesterday’s game, is making excellent progress in hospital.
“A special mention and thanks-you to Laura and Tania Rourke for their part in saving Ken’s life!”
The Warriors won a gritty encounter against their old foes 12-4.
