Feed canal birds this winter: But spare them the white loaf!

Wiganers are being urged to feed birds on the borough's canal network this winter - but steer clear of bread.

While a white loaf is considered the traditional treat for our feathered friends, it is in fact bad for them. The Canal and River Trust says white bread can make ducks and swans overweight while surplus amounts of this soggy stuff can create a toxicity in the water and attract vermin.

So if the Leeds and Liverpool Canal freezes over in the coming weeks, much better to give them oats, corn, defrosted frozen peas or cut up leftover veg...and also exercise portion control!
