Reports of the incident posted online suggest two riders were out on their horses when they encountered a group of motorcyclists on scrambler-type machines.

The revving of the engines scared one of the horses and its rider fell from the saddle.

She was taken to hospital for a check-over but was later discharged, social media accounts said.

The other rider managed to quickly dismount and get hold of her horse.

The frightened horse which reared was also caught.

Reports suggested the riders left the scene, heading in the directions of both Shevington and Appley Bridge.

Urgent appeals are now being made for anyone who has video footage of the incident to contact the police.

Information should be passed along using the non-emergency number 101.

Fire crews in the borough also had an equine incident to deal with over the Easter weekend after a horse became stuck in a ditch at a remote location.

Up to 15 firefighters, including the technical response unit and water unit, were needed on Saturday evening at Bedford Moss south of Astley.

After around two hours the animal, which was up to its neck in mud and water in a brook, was eventually freed unhurt.
