MINI-MARKET staff were terrorised by hammer-wielding robbers wearing fright masks.

Police today launched an urgent appeal for witnesses following the raid at the Spar shop on City Road, Kitt Green, at 9.15pm on Saturday.

Two men wearing skull masks were seen briefly hovering outside before one of them went in while the other held the door open.

The robber threatened staff with a hammer and they both escaped with a quantity of cash. No-one was injured in the incident.

The hammer-wielding robber was white, about 5ft 7ins tall, with a slim build and wearing a dark hoody.

The hammer had a yellow handle. His accomplice had similar clothing but was taller, around 6ft.

It’s believed they both had hoods up and had some kind lower face “skull-type’ mask or scarf or possibly face paint” with distinctive “teeth” showing.

No getaway vehicle has been reported so they may have made their escape on foot.

PC Paul Catterall, based at Wigan, said: “These robbers clearly went out of their way to be as scary and intimidating as possible with their skull design masks or face coverings.

“Thankfully no staff or customers were hurt but you can imagine they were upset by their ordeal.

“I now want to hear from anyone who saw two men dressed in this kind of Halloween style nearby.”
