Fun fair appeal

TRAVELLING showmen have lost a battle to set up a showmen’s site in Astley.

Paul Jeffries lodged an appeal after the council refuse planning permission to put seven pitches along with a storage building and associated access on land adjacent to Manchester Road.

But a Defra Inspector has now ruled that the bid didn’t represent the special circumstances needed for development within the borough’s green belt zone.

He also found that the proposed large permanent building for storing fairground rides would cause “significant harm” to the outlook of the land as well, as conflicting with the council’s own Unitary Development Plan.
