A WIGAN woman has spoken of her fury after two dogs were pulled out of a Wigan stretch of the Leeds-Liverpool canal near her house within weeks of each other.

Mary Kellam, who lives close to the locks in Ince, has seen a Jack Russell and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier rescued from the water in the last couple of months.

It’s just absolutely horrible that this can happen and I want to warn people of what’s going on

It’s believed they were thrown in the water deliberately.

“We’ve been here for 15 years and never come across anything like this before,” she said.

“Now, two dogs have been pulled out, it’s awful. During the summer, the Canal and River Trust have security guards and one evening at around 8.30pm, one of them came knocking on our door after finding a Jack Russell in the water.

“We eventually managed to track down and re-unite the dog with its owner , who lived in Rochdale!”

It transpired that the dog, called Buddy, had been in a van which had been stolen In Rochdale.

Bizarrely, the van was later found in Rochdale so how Buddy ended up in the canal in Wigan remains somewhat of a mystery.

The second incident was shocking for a different reason.

“Two men came down with a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and chucked the dog in the lock,” said Mary.

“My partner went out and told them to get it out. One of the men threatened him with a knife. Fortunately they managed to open the gates of the lock and a Hungarian chap managed to get the dog out.

“Someone there recognised the dog and it was reunited with its owner.

“It’s just absolutely horrible that this can happen and I want to warn people of what’s going on.

“It’s so sad that people are doing this. We’re not sure if it was the same men involved both times.”
