Giant turbine visible from 13 miles away

Thousands of Wiganers could soon have a new marker on their skyline after plans for a 126m-tall wind turbine in Skelmersdale were unveiled.

Proposals to submit a planning application for the 400ft construction are in the works after applicant Clean Earth Energy, asked for a screening option from West Lancashire District Council to see if an Environmental Impact Assessment would be required.

The proposed turbine would be sited on land at Raymond House, Garnett Place, and would stand 126m in height when the blades are at their highest.

Planning documents show that the turbine, including its blades, would be visible from nearby Up Holland but also all the way to Atherton and Tyldesley at the other end of Wigan borough, 13 miles from the site.

A Clean Earth spokesperson said: “We are a long way off submitting a planning application for this proposal and the inquiry is merely speculative for the time being.”

“No planning application is being prepared as of yet.”

Local councillors for Up Holland were made aware of the proposal but did not provide a comment. West Lancashire Council is expected to provide a response by May 17.

Wigan is no stranger to wind turbine applications and they are not always welcomed, despite their green credentials.

In March 2014, plans for a 90ft structure in Shevington were scrapped after local councillors and campaign group Shevington Turbine Opposition Party (STOP) came out against it.
