POLICE are hunting a sex attacker after a 14-year-old girl was assaulted.
According to reports, the man followed two girls through a residential area of Beech Hill before launching an attack on one of the teenagers.
The attack happened as the schoolgirl and her friend were walking down Hazel Avenue just after 6pm on Monday when they noticed a man was following them.
The attacker then walked quickly until he had overtaken them by a few yards before turning round and sexually assaulting the youngster.
The victim screamed in horror and both girls ran off.
Police are now hunting the attacker and are appealing to anyone with any information to come forward, after the girls managed to give a very detailed description of the attacker – including the features of a distinctive hat.
The offender has been described as aged between 40 and 50, of large build, wearing dark shiny tracksuit top and light grey trousers. He wore a black bob hat with a red and green stripe on the front.
DC Michael Dougill from Wigan CID said: “This was an unprovoked assault on a young girl which left her and her friend shocked and upset.
“I would urge people to be aware of their surroundings and where possible, walk within a group of people.
“If anyone saw a man fitting the description, I would urge them get in contact with police.”
This is the latest in a series of sex attacks in the Wigan area.
A fortnight ago, police received a report that a 13-year-old girl had been raped on a recreation field in Scholes shortly before Christmas.
That was followed by an alleged rape in Wigan Town Centre in the early hours of the morning on Sunday, January 30.
Chicago Rock on King Street was locked down as police hunted for the attacker of the 18-year-old girl.
