Leigh Sports Village is the home to Leigh Centurions rugby league team as well as Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers Under 21s.

It has high quality conference and banqueting facilities and a wide range of sporting facilities including athletics stadium, floodlit sports pitches, swimming pool and gym and other leisure and shopping facilities.

Lord Peter Smith is portfolio holder on the GMCA for health and wellbeing as well as being the leader of Wigan Council.

Lord Smith said: “We are pleased to welcome the GMCA to the fantastic surroundings of Leigh Sports Village this week.

“It is right that the GMCA holds its meetings in the 10 boroughs that make up Greater Manchester and when it comes to Wigan it is a great opportunity to showcase the wonderful assets we have in the borough such as Leigh Sports Village.”

The GMCA is the lead organisation for delivering the historic devolution agreement with the government signed in 2014.

This gives Greater Manchester greater control over issues such as transport, planning, housing, growth and skills as well as control of the £6bn health and social care budget.

On the agenda for Friday’s meeting are reports concerning employment and skills, housing investment and air quality management.

The GMCA includes Wigan, Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford.
