WIGAN’S treasured Haigh Hall may be transformed into a hotel and sports complex.
Council chiefs are set to approve a public/private partnership plan next Tuesday after many months of review to plug its investment gap.
They pledge it will “protect and enhance” the stately mansion and country park because the local authority has little ability to plough millions into it during an era of swingeing Government cuts.
If approved, the hunt to find a suitable investment partner will start immediately...with the council retaining ownership of Haigh Hall and Country Park.
Managed by leisure and culture provider Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, the buildings and estate are already a major tourist destination attracting around 300,000 visitors a year.
But a review by external consultants found that enhancing the site and improving the existing facilities could attract even more visitors and bring in much-needed revenue.
If procurement goes ahead, the potential options could include turning the hall into a hotel and opening up the park for new sports or adventure activities.
