It’s (almost) summertime and the weather is at least starting to look a lot more fine so why not begin embarking on an outdoor workout?
If running is your thing then summer is sure to have put a stride in your step.
Now it’s time to make sure your body is prepared to pound the streets so here are some tips to make sure you’re ready for your workouts.
Strengthen your core
Running outdoors is a lot different from training on the treadmill.
The uneven ground and concrete floors all impact on your core muscles so sit-ups and abdominal crunches are the perfect way to ensure your core stands up to outdoor conditions.
Work those Legs!
It might seem straight forward but improving leg strength is a must when it comes to running in the great outdoors.
Lunges and step ups are easy moves which require no gym equipment and will prepare you for the running season. Another great exercise is the Bulgarian split squat – simply place your back leg on a stable surface, such as a bench. Set your front foot ahead of you and keeping your shoulders, back and core tight, drop down slowly and rise again on the same leg until standing.
It’s all about pacing
Much like running itself, it’s important not to go too hard too early when prepping your body for the outdoor running season.
Why not put together an outdoor body workout and complete it once or twice per week to start with, before moving up to three or four times per week, depending on how quickly your fitness improves and the muscle soreness fades! Once you start finding the exercises easier you can always incorporate dumbbells, barbells or resistance bands into your running workouts.
