Hens in the lens for Wigan organisation's new calendar

Many of these hens did not have the best start in life - but they are now enjoying the spotlight as the stars of a new calendar.

Their proud owners submitted photographs for a 2019 calendar being produced by Amberswood-based Lucky Hens Rescue.

A lot of the birds were caged hens, rescued by Lucky Hens rather than being slaughtered and given a fresh start in life by their new owners.

Alison Thorpe, who runs Lucky Hens, said: “We have been thinking of doing a calendar for a few years so Kerry Pimblet, our Chester co-ordinator, asked people to show their photographs of their lovely hens and has chosen 12.

“The calendars have been ordered now to fund-raise and make nice Christmas presents for family and friends.”

She said there were some “gorgeous” and “striking” photographs to choose from.

The A4 calendars are now being printed and will hopefully become a hit.

Alison said: “We have only ordered 100 so far to see how they go. We need essential funds for winter and this will help.”

It is a busy time for Lucky Hens as preparations are made for the next rehoming day on Saturday, October 13 and for caring for the animals during the winter months.

Money is needed to buy food and other essential items, while a fund-raising appeal is under way to pay for a new shelter.

The organisation is continuing to seek donations of clothes, shoes and bags. Good quality items are sold at events and online, though money can still be made if items are damaged, such as shoes with a heel missing.

The Lucky Hens calendar costs £7.99, with postage for up to five priced at £1.99.

To pre-order, payment can be sent via PayPal at [email protected], with mention of the calendar and address in the comments, or a cheque can be made out to Lucky Hens CIC.
