Lyndsey Stone was honoured with Wigan Council’s Heart of the Community, recognising her role within children and young people’s services.

Throughout her 15 years of work, the Whelley 31-year-old has given advice and help to bereaved children, street gang members, and youngsters who are victims or witnesses of domestic abuse.

She set up Me2U charity, supporting youths who have lost loved ones, and now works at Hop, Skip and Jump, a charitable organisation which provides respite for children with disabilities.

Lyndsey said: “It was a bit of a shock to get an award. I feel so privileged. I have worked with young families for 15 years. I started off as a volunteer at the council and then I got a job within children and young people’s services, working in children’s homes and guiding those who need extra support.

“I have always wanted to make a difference. Sometimes people give up on some children who are troublesome, but they need even more support. I want to change the future. If I can make a difference in one child’s life, it is worth it.”

Coun Kelly Ready has worked with Lyndsey on a number of projects over the years and nominated her for the award. She said: “Lyndsey has a heart of gold who always goes the extra mile and always gives 100 per cent. Her passion is what makes her stand out from the rest. Wigan is a better place because of her work.”
