Wigan’s HMV store appears to have survived the chop despite the retailer going into administration, after a list of stores at risk of closing was released.

The store in the Grand Arcade, which only opened at the end of November 2018, was at risk of closing its doors after the company announced it was going into administration for the second time in six years.

The CD and DVD chain was a founder tenant of the Grand Arcade when it opened but as the business first got into financial difficulties, the Wigan unit became one of the casualties of a major restructuring.

In late October, the chain announced it was returning to Wigan's high street after a five-year absence, much to the delight of Wiganers. But the joy threatened to quickly turn to misery late in December, as the group which trades from 130 stores and employs 2,200 staff, filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators amid a cash crisis at the firm.

A full list of store at risk of closing down has now been revealed, with Wigan's branch not included on the list. The Warrington outlet also appears to have survived, having not been featured on the list, but Preston's store is named as a potential site to close.

Other high profile locations such as the Trafford Centre, Manchester Arndale and Liverpool One are also on the list of potential closures, as is Manchester city centre's branch of Fopp, a CD and DVD chain owned by HMV.
