A HOMELESS Wigan man who was twice caught shoplifting told police he would rather steal from shops than burgle somebody’s home.

Jason Bolton, 31, admitted stealing £33.69 worth of food from Marks and Spencer on February 19 and £17.34 worth of groceries from Asda on March 27.

Wigan Magistrates’ Court heard how, on the first occasion, Bolton had even asked store staff where to find the potatoes, while holding a leg of lamb in his hand, before trying to leave the store without paying.

Melissa Fagan, defending, asked for any costs to be deducted from her client’s benefits.

Magistrates handed Bolton a nine-month community order and a six-month drug rehabilitation order. He must also pay a £60 victim surcharge.
