A HOMELESS Wigan man was caught red-handed stealing cosmetics from Poundland.

Jason Bolton, 30, selected toiletries worth £24 on October 9 before stashing the items in a plastic carrier bag and leaving making no attempt to pay.

Wigan magistrates heard how, when he was stopped, he said “I don’t get any help - that’s why I’ve done it”.

Peter Moran, defending, told how his client suffers from anxiety and depression and was desperate because his benefits had been stopped. He added that Bolton’s benefits had since been re-started.

Justices fined Bolton £30 and ordered him to pay a £20 victim surcharge. They also pointed him in the direction of Wigan Life Centre and advised using the borough’s foodbank if he falls on hard times in the future.
