The fire started at around 8pm on Thursday night on the Seddons building site behind Poolstock Lane, destroying two partially built semi-detached houses.

Flames erupted from the roofs of the buildings and smoke was visible across the borough.

It took crews from Wigan and Skelmersdale around two and a half hours to extinguish.

Firefighters believe that the blaze was started deliberately by children hanging around the estate, and it has been reported that one had left a mobile phone in the vacant buildings.

Police have been informed and CCTV footage has been handed over by a member of staff with access to the security recordings..
