MASKED thugs fled empty-handed after trying to hold up a Wigan town centre bank.
Police are now appealing for witnesses to the attempted robbery at around 4.45pm on Thursday September 17 at Lloyds TSB on Market Street.
The two men threatened staff with a single-barrelled sawn-off shotgun and a knife.
They demanded cash but were forced to leave empty-handed before getting into a dark-coloured Volkswagen Golf parked on Frog Lane.
The first would-be robber is described as large-built man, wearing dark clothing and with a black balaclava over his face.
His accomplice was around 6ft tall, wearing a navy blue hooded top and a mask over his face.
Det Insp Chris Mossop said: “Although no one was hurt, staff have been left extremely shaken, especially as one of the men appeared to be holding a weapon.
“At this moment in time, we do not know whether the weapon is authentic but we are currently investigating.
“I would ask anyone who may have witnessed the men going into the bank or getting into the car and driving off, to contact us as soon as possible.”
