Identity of man killed by train still unknown

POLICE are still making inquiries into the identity of a man found dead after being hit by a train in Wigan.

The incident happened shortly before 11pm last night (Wednesday) when emergency services were initially called to Brampton Close in Platt Bridge.

Police and firefighters spent 30 minutes searching the area around the railway line following the report that somebody had been struck by a passing train.

The police helicopter was also called out before a man’s body was found a quarter-of-a-mile away close to Lily Lane in Bamfurlong.

Officers have spent today trying to identify the man, but as of this afternoon, had still not located his relatives.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: “We were called to the line near Bamfurlong in Wigan on Wednesday, May 20, to reports of a person hit by a train.

“Officers attended the incident, reported at 11pm, alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police.

“Medics from North West Ambulance Service attended but a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Work is now underway to identify the man, inform his family, and compile a report for the coroner.

“The incident is currently being treated as unexplained.”
