Images show overturned refuse wagon in Wigan

The incident is reported to have happened in Scholes at around 6.30am today (January 14).

There is now a large recovery operation underway to clear rubbish and lift the wagon upright.

Nobody involved is thought to be badly hurt.

The road from School Lane/Orchard Street to the junction of the Salvation Army is closed.

Commuters and residents have been asked to avoid the area.

Wigan Council said on Facebook: "A refuse wagon has overturned in Scholes. Thankfully, those involved are OK, however, there is now a large-scale recovery operation underway to clear rubbish and lift the wagon upright.

"The road from School Lane / Orchard St to the junction of the Salvation Army is closed. We ask commuters and residents to please avoid this area."

An eyewitness reported seeing cranes trying to lift the wagon.

They said: "Bad accident at Scholes. A lorry and a skip are on its side facing the Salvation Army."

"The road is closed, there’s cranes trying to lift it."

Another resident said: "The driver tipped his bulked wagon in Wigan town centre.

"The driver is in hospital as we speak.

"He’s in hospital A&E now, the wagon is still there. It was a Volvo roll on roll off wagon.

"The council are helping to co-ordinate the clear up. "

An ambulance service spokesman said: "We got the call at 6.34am. We’ve attended the incident with an ambulance but didn’t take anyone to hospital."
