DAVE Whelan received an honorary degree from the University of Bolton - and joked that it had taken him until the age of almost 80 to get his first academic qualification.
The former Latics chairman said it was “flattering” to be given the accolade, making him a Doctor of Business Administration.

He said: “The vice-chancellor of the university wrote to me about four months ago and said he had been studying what I had been doing through my life and he would like to grant me this honour for my work in both football and retail. He asked me if I would accept it and I wrote back to say that I would be delighted. It’s very flattering.”
