Staff at KFC on Standishgate have been told that the store is to close on March 20 after the company “evaluated its locations” to better meet demand.

But a spokesman for KFC has said efforts will be made to relocate staff where possible.

The spokesman said: “We’re always evaluating the location of our restaurants so that they are in the best areas to meet demand, and have taken the decision to close our Standishgate KFC.

“The restaurant will close on March 20 and we are working with team members to find relevant opportunities at nearby KFC restaurants.”

The news comes just weeks after plans for a new drive-through restaurant at Robin Park were approved by Wigan Council as part of a retail unit expansion which will also include a Subway and Costa.

Plans have also been submitted to build a new budget hotel, a Nando’s and a Bella Italia on a seperate part of the retail park and give the Empire Cinema a facelift.
