Killer’s bid for parole is delayed

A WIGAN couple have been given fresh assurance that their daughter’s killer has little prospect of early release.

Indeed the latest parole hearing for Darren Pilkington, convicted of the 2006 manslaughter of Carly Fairhurst, has been put back six months, so slim are his chances.

Ministry of Justice officials told the 19-year-old victim’s parents, Trevor and Sheila, they were opposing release for Pilkington, who was given an indeterminate jail term.

Furthermore, he has been up before the prison governor three times in the last year alone and is said to “understand that he is going to be behind bars for a very long time”.

While the Fairhursts, from Park Road, Hindley, will keep having to go to parole hearings on an annual basis, the latest news allows them to focus properly on their continuing charity work for Victim Support counsellors.

Before the weekend they presented a £750 cheque to the Wigan branch, the proceeds of the latest annual Quiz for Carly. And preparations are now under way for another major fund-raiser. Victim Support fund-raisers Mandy Grimshaw and Sally Blood, who previously raised hundreds with a sponsored parachute jump, have turned to romance for their inspiration this time round.

They are organising their own version of the quiz show Mr and Mrs and have enlisted Andy Whyment, better known as Coronation Street’s Kirk Sutherland, to be compere at the evening at Georgia Brown’s in Hindley on Thursday February 10. Sally said: “We were delighted that Andy is coming along. It is sure to add to the fun. We want this to be a big money-spinner for Wigan Victim Support and Witness Service.”

Audience members will be asked to write something humorous about themselves on the rear of the £5 tickets and then these will be put into a hat for landlord and lady Gary and Alison Fordham to pull out randomly the names of three couples to compete.

Trevor said: “We are relieved about the parole news and delighted at Sally and Mandy’s new fund-raiser. Georgia Brown’s is also laying free food which is terrific.”

Tickets are available from Sally on 07714 125 716 or Mandy on 07951 696531.
