Firefighters were called to Landgate Farm, off Landgate Lane, in Bryn, at 10.30pm on Saturday to tackle the flames in one of its sheds.

A lamb had knocked over a heating lamp, setting fire to straw which quickly spread.

The farmer had led the flock of around 20 lambs to safety, but sadly three died.

Watch manager Gareth Gray, of Wigan Fire Service, said: “The shed was full of lambs which had been brought in as it was too cold. One of the lambs knocked over a heating lamp which set fire to the straw. This spread very quickly through the building, as it was well alight.

“The farmer got most of the lambs out and he helped move the straw out using machinery.

“About two or three lambs were lost.

“We used two jets and a hose reel to put out the fire.”
