The work, which begins next month, will see customers benefit from the latest Technogym equipment and technology, as well as virtual classes in the existing group studio, and a new studio will be created for activities such as yoga and pilates.

The Life Centre will become one of the first of its kind in the UK to use Technogym’s Skillrow, developed in collaboration with Olympic athletes to provide a realistic feeling of being on water.

Skillmill and Excite Climb will also be used for the first time in Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles’ centres in the borough, giving members the ideal equipment to train like sports professionals.

A “mywellness cloud” will also be introduced, allowing members to build their own programmes, take part in gym challenges and track their training inside and outside of the gym, linking with up to 10 apps to provide a full fitness experience.

Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles is leading on the refurbishment. Managing director Peter Burt said: “Upgrading the fitness offer at Wigan Life Centre is a very exciting process.

“It will see us introduce some exclusive equipment for our members, only used by a minority of other leisure providers in the UK so far.

“We will also be expanding into a second studio, purpose built to provide low impact group classes.”

The first phase of refurbishment begins on Monday, June 5 with a view to completion on Friday, June 16.

During this time, the studio will be closed until 5pm each day, but fast classes will be introduced in the gym and a revised class timetable will be available from 5pm.

Gym works run from June 16 to July 3, during which time it will be closed but extra classes will be laid on.

Members can access all other Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles centres as part of their membership.

Swimming will not be affected.
