A NEW group to support Wigan’s brave soldiers has been launched in the borough.

Our Local Heroes Foundation, which was established in 2011 by former Army Officer Steve Pearson in Preston, has set up a new branch to cover Wigan and Leigh.

The organisation offers grants to veterans and members of the armed forces to help improve their lives.

It also supports them through training to get employment and re-establish themselves in the community.

Kelly Flanagan, who is leading the branch in Wigan and Leigh, said: “We offer grants to former and current members of the armed forces in the community to help improve the quality of people’s lives.

“If they want to go on training courses to gain employment we help them with applications.

“We look at grant applications for everything - each is considered on their own merits.

“The charity has been going for some time, but we have now set up a scheme for Wigan and Leigh.

“We want members of the armed forces to know that we are here so we can support them.

“We believe in offering this because of all they have done for our country.

“We want to look after people who don’t always feel they have the help they need when they come out of service.

“These people have made huge sacrifices so we want to help where we can.”

Our Local Heroes will be based on Sunshine House, Scholes Precinct, every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, or Dorset Road Community Centre, in Hag Fold, Tuesday and Wednesdays.
