A WIGAN stretch of the M6 has been re-opened after a closure of more than three hours due to an overturned lorry.
The motorway was closed from junction 25 in Marus Bridge with diversions through the town to junction 26 at Orrell following the incident, which happened shortly before 8am this morning (Thursday).
Drivers were advised to allow plenty of extra time for their journey and to take alternative routes where possible with the Highways Agency reporting tailbacks are stretching all the way to junction 23.
Fire crews from Wigan, Leigh and Skelmersdale also attended the scene and freed one man who has been taken to hospital.
However, the road was re-opened at around 11.30am after the carriageway was cleared.
The Highways Agency ssaid it was hoping traffic would be restored to full flow by 12.45pm as the backlog clears up.
