ONE lucky Wigan punter is counting his winnings after an astonishing treble bet came up.

Bookmaker William Hill has confirmed that a customer from the town correctly predicted not one, not two but three of last weekend’s shock results in the company’s largest-ever winning football treble.

In a weekend where the underdogs prevailed, relegation favourites Blackburn Rovers won at Old Trafford, Aston Villa beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge while struggling Sunderland pulled off an almighty victory at home to league leaders Manchester City.

And one Wiganer correctly predicted all three results coming in.

The winner has asked to remain anonymous but William Hill have confirmed he is male, an Everton fan and is in his mid-40s.

He placed £5 on the bet which gave odds of more than 1,500/1 – meaning he brought home a cool £7,590.

His bravery looked like it wasn’t going to pay off in the dying seconds of the Sunderland v Manchester City game.

While the other two results had already come in, the game at the Stadium of Light was 0-0 as it entered the 93rd minute.

But Ji Dong-won’s last gasp strike ensured that our man went home a winner.

That was supposed to be the most likely of the three to come in with odds of 5/1 while Aston Villa were 10/1 to beat Chelsea.

However, the bookmakers offered the largest ever odds for a single Premier League win in their history when they had Blackburn to beat Manchester United at 22/1.

William Hill spokesperson Joe Crilly said: “To find three of the least predictable results of the season and put them in a virtually impossible treble leaves us very relieved he was only prepared to risk a fiver on the outcome.

“The Blackburn game saw the biggest winning Premier League odds we have ever offered, 22/1 for them to win at Old Trafford and by adding Sunderland and Villa to the mix, the lucky punter beat odds of 1517/1.

“It is a little surprising he didn’t add Everton to win at West Brom, which would have boosted his winnings to nearly £20,000.”
