Man denies life-threatening street attack

A MAN has been accused of assault after another man was left with life-threatening injuries following a vicious New Year’s Eve attack.

Karl Hazelden, of Balharry Avenue, Haydock, was charged with assault over the weekend after being arrested last Thursday.

The 28-year-old appeared at St Helens Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning.

He denies the charge and was released on conditional bail to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on May 6. A 17-year-old boy from the Parr area of St Helens was also arrested over the attack which left a 40-year-old man in hospital fighting for his life.

The teenager has since been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Police were called to Church Road in Haydock shortly before midnight on December 31 following reports that a man was lying unconscious near to the junction with Arrowsmith Road - opposite The Jade Garden Chinese takeaway.

An ambulance was called and paramedics took the victim, a local man who had suffered serious head injuries, to Walton Neurological Hospital in Liverpool.

He yesterday remained in a critical but stable condition.
