Man dies after being hit by train

A MAN has died after being struck by a train.

Trains in and out of Wigan North Western ground to a halt at 3.19pm following reports that a man had been hit by a train close to the station.

Two of the North West Ambulance Service’s Hazardous Area Response Team (Hart) vehicles attended the incident, which is believed to have happened around the Rectory Lane area in Standish.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: “Our officers were called to the line close to Wigan North Western station on Tuesday following a report a person had been struck by a train.

“Colleagues from Greater Manchester Police attended the incident, which was reported to BTP at 3.24pm and is being treated as non-suspicious.

“Medics from North West Ambulance Service pronounced the man dead at the scene.

“Officers are currently working to establish the identity of the man, and inform his family.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Network Rail confirmed there had been a fatality on the tracks. A spokesman said that services between Wigan and Preston had been affected but both lines had been reopened around an hour after the incident although delays were expected for some time afterwards.
