The ambulance service initially said the man was in his 60s but police have now confirmed he was 80 years old.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said investigators did not believe there were any criminal offences involved in the man's death.

They said: "Officers were called around 9.40am on Monday, February 15 to Heath Street, Golborne to a report of a man suffering a medical episode.

"Emergency services attended and an 80-year-old man was taken to hospital where, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was sadly pronounced dead.

"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

Several ambulances were spotted in the street by residents and a police car which was blocking other traffic from passing through.

The road reopened just after 10am when emergency services had left the scene.
