A WIGAN man who threw a knife at his partner and threatened to slit her open with it while his children were sleeping nearby will be sentenced at crown court next month.

Gareth Colin Whitty, of Mannion House, Scholes, admitted assaulting Jade Atherton at their home in Bickershaw Lane, Bickershaw, when he appeared at Wigan Magistrates’ Court.

Gill Petrovic, prosecuting, told the hearing that on October 29, Whitty had spent the day with Miss Atherton and their two young children and had started drinking in the evening.

They were sitting on the sofa with the children either side of them and when Miss Atherton asked to use the laptop, he slammed it shut and became aggressive, shouting and swearing.

The 27-year-old entered the kitchen and brought out a sharp knife.

Ms Petrovic said: “He said ‘I will slit your insides.’

“She ignored it as it was the best way to deal with his behaviour.

“He threw the knife at her, which hit her head, causing a cut to bleed.

“At either side of her were her children and she was very frightened.”

After she threatened to call the police, he punched her, causing a lump to form on her head.

Magistrates ruled that as the incident involved a knife, it was too serious to be dealt with there.

Whitty, who was defended by Martin Jones, was released on conditional bail and will appear at Liverpool Crown Court for sentencing on December 5.
