A WIGAN man is fighting for his life after being savagely attacked.

Police today appealed for witnesses after the unnamed victim suffered serious head injuries at an address in Bamfurlong.

Shortly after 6am on Monday, officers were called to Redland Court following a report of a disturbance and that a man had been injured.

They found a 38-year-old man had been assaulted and suffered serious head and facial injuries.

He was taken to hospital for treatment to a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain.

A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and a 35-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. They remain in police custody for questioning.

Two of the suspects are described as white men, believed to be in their late 20s or early 30s. Both were smartly dressed in dark suit trousers and dark coloured sweaters.

Det Insp Paul Rollinson based at Leigh police station said: “A man is seriously ill in hospital after being assaulted early on Monday morning and we are making numerous enquiries to identify those responsible.

“We believe this man was assaulted by up to three men, who are then believed to have put the victim into a taxi before running away from the scene on foot along Bolton Road.

“There are likely to have been quite a few people around at this time in the morning, either going to or returning from work, that may have seen men running away from the scene or heard a disturbance at around 6am. If anyone has any information at all, I would ask them to call my officers directly as this could be vital to our investigation.”

Any witnesses are asked to contact police on 0161 856 7225 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
