Man fighting for life in hospital with serious head injury

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after he was found with a serious head injury near to Saddle Junction.

Police, who have been at the scene since the discovery in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday), are appealing for the public’s help to identify the man who is currently in a critical condition.

He was found collapsed on the pavement opposite Kwikfit on Wallgate by two members of the public who contacted the emergency services at 1.25am this morning, Wednesday.

He was taken to hospital where he is being treated for a serious head injury, and remains in a life-threatening condition.

Police are investigating the possibility the man may have been assaulted and are appealing for the public’s help to help identify him and establish the circumstances surrounding his injuries.

He is described as white, about 30 years-old, about 6ft tall, and he has a stubbly beard and is going bald. He was wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt with a grey cardigan and blue Lacoste trainers.

Detective Inspector Martin Reddington of Wigan division said: “We are in the early stages of our investigation and we are not ruling anything out at the moment, but we believe that the man has been assaulted.

“He has a severe head injury and it is vital that we ascertain who he is and what happened to him.

“We are looking at CCTV in the area, but I would ask that if you were out in Wigan last night and saw a man being assaulted, or possibly a fight, near to Wallgate, that you contact police immediately.”

The road around Saddle Junction was closed earlier today but traffic is now free flowing.
