Man fights for life after being hit by car outside railway station

Around 7.15pm yesterday evening (Thursday 20 September 2018) police were called to Leigh Road in Westhoughton to reports of a collision.

The collision – involving a pedestrian and a black Ford Fiesta that was travelling towards Leigh – took place immediately outside Daisy Hill station.

The pedestrian – a man in his 40s – was crossing the road at the pelican crossing at the time of the collision. He was taken to hospital with serious head injuries where he remains in a life-threatening condition.

An 18-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has since been released under investigation.

People with dashcam footage and witnesses to the collision are encouraged to come forward.

Police Sergeant Lee Westhead of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Initial witness accounts suggest that there were a number of cars and pedestrians in the area at the time of the collision.

“If you were a passenger that arrived at the station or you were outside waiting to pick someone up and saw something that could be useful to us, please get in touch.”
