A MAN has been jailed after a nine-year-old girl was hurt in a road traffic collision in Wigan.
Daniel Atkinson, 24, of no fixed abode pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing and was jailed today at Liverpool Crown Court.
He was sentenced to six months imprisonment, disqualified from driving for 18 months with an extended test and a supervision order for 12 months.
At 6.20pm on Saturday, June 14, police were called Plane Avenue following a collision between a girl and an off-road motorbike.
Officers attended and the girl was flown to hospital for treatment to a serious head injury and a broken leg.
Atkinson admitted driving without due care and attention, driving while disqualified, using a vehicle without insurance, driving a motorcycle without protective head gear, using a vehicle without a speedometer fitted and using a vehicle not fitted with a horn.
Police Sergeant Lee Westhead said: “Atkinson showed complete disregard for the safety of other motorists and pedestrians. He decided, for reasons only known to himself, he would ride the bike, despite being disqualified and not having any insurance.
“As a result of his selfish actions a young girl is still in a lot of pain and is facing a long recovery and treatment to her injuries. The impact on her and her family has been substantial. We could have been dealing with a potentially fatal incident and we are just grateful she was not more seriously hurt.”
