POLICE cannot rule out murder after a Wigan man found unconscious in the street lost his battle for life.
Francis Farrell died in hospital on Wednesday night, having suffered a serious head injury in an incident during the early hours of Sunday morning.
Officers say that unless it is proved otherwise, they are treating the Beech Hill 56-year-old’s death as foul play.
Mr Farrell was found collapsed at around 4.15am on Sunday near the entrance to the former council tip on Frog Lane, Gidlow.
He was last seen leaving Wiend Bar in Wigan town centre only 25 minutes earlier then caught on CCTV walking down Frog Lane at 3.58am.
A passer-by found the stricken man and called for an ambulance. A post-mortem examination was due to take place on Friday.
Meanwhile, police are asking for public help in piecing together Mr Farrell’s movements.
He was wearing a light blue checked shirt with light blue jeans, black shoes, a black fleece and black hat. He was white and around 6ft tall, of medium build with short grey hair.
A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault but bailed until July 19 pending further inquires.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at Wigan CID on 0161 856 7149 or contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
