A MAN was punched in the face by a stranger who had just asked him for a cigarette.

Wigan police today appealed for witnesses and other information relating to the attack which happened in Pottery Road on the late evening of Friday May 8.

The 20-year-old man was walking along the road near the pier at 11.50pm when he was approached by the stranger, who asked him for a cigarette but then, without provocation, hit him in the face.

The assailant is described as white, between 5ft 8ins and 6ft tall, of slim build, in his early 20s, and he was wearing a blue, long-sleeved top.

PC Ian Brookes of Wigan division said: “This was an unprovoked attack in which a man was assaulted.

“Thankfully, his injuries are only minor but we will not tolerate mindless violence and I would urge anyone with information to come forward and speak to police.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 7255 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
