A MAN was today being treated for stab wounds after an horrific knife attack.
The unnamed 25-year-old was stabbed in the face, hand and leg during the onslaught in the early hours of Wednesday.
The assault took place at around 3.45am outside a house in Elizabeth Street and the victim fled into Warrington Road from where the emergency services.
The knifeman, believed to be in his 20s, is currently still at large.
A police spokeswoman said that the man had suffered a particularly severe hand injuries but, mercifully, none of the wounds was thought to be life-threatening.
It is believed police have since obtained a warrant to search a house in Elizabeth Street.
The spokeswoman said: “We received a call at around 3.50am on Wednesday to say there had been an altercation in the street and a man had been injured by another who was in possession of what was described as a large knife. He was stabbed several times.
“The victim managed to escape his attacker and contact was made with the emergency services.
“No arrest has so far been made and inquiries are ongoing.”
The victim was taken to Wigan Infirmary where his condition was described as stable.
